TIPS FOR RECRUITING ONLINE ESL TEACHERS
When I first heard about referral links for recruiting online ESL teachers I made a huge mistake. I only thought about my immediate circle and I thought other YouTuber’s dominated the market. How could I get any recruits if people were already going to someone else’s YouTube channel? Eventually, I realized that was a limiting belief. If you have a similar mindset I want you to challenge yourself to question why you believe that and proceed to prove to yourself that you can dominate whatever industry you want if you put your mind to it.
where to find people interested in teaching esl online
The turning point for me for recruiting online ESL teachers was when iTutorGroup invited me to do interviews. They gave me a quota and I did everything in my power to reach it. I used one platform to recruit and it worked really well.
Being that I had been teaching online for two years I was a part of quite a few Facebook groups for online ESL teachers. Within those groups I would do three things:
- write about a very unique reason why I loved working for iTutorGroup, which led people to inquire about working there
- search in the Facebook group for people that had low bookings at their current company and inform them about iTG
- Direct message people who might be interested in joining iTG
Which one do you think I had the most success with? I think it was a mix of the first and third strategy. Eventually though, trying to manually find recruits became exhausting. I knew I would get worn out from it so from the beginning I created a few videos on YouTube. Guess what that led to? I now recruit people passively.
how to help your referrals Pass the Interview
Something to know before you start recruiting is that teaching online isn’t for everyone. Some people won’t pass the interview, but if they are determined anyone with a personality can learn the strategies to pass the interview.
The two main things I do to help my referrals is send them to my Ace the Interview video or to my blog. I also made a general video about online ESL interview questions. However, being that a lot of people want additional help I decided to create a course for those interested in diving deep into the strategies necessary for teaching online. Now, I’ll be directing people to my course as well.
How to help your referrals finish the application process
The best way to help your referrals finish the application is to reach out to them via e-mail. Check in and ask what they need help with.
Have a document with FAQ’s or ready made materials to assist them. You’ll get a lot of the same questions. You can start copying and pasting questions and answers into a Google document every time you get an e-mail or direct message. It’s best to be organized from the beginning.
ensure your referrals start teaching
A lot of times people will pass the interview, but they might not do the onboarding or teach a class. That’s why it is important to stay in touch via e-mail. You don’t want to send too many e-mails, but once a week or once every other week is sufficient.
How to be a good online english teacher
Once people start teaching, they will still come to you with questions. That’s why I have my blog and YouTube channel. There are so many questions about teaching online. With this being a new industry, I think the companies are also learning how to effectively train independent contractors.
If you’re not sure how to help your referrals with improving their teaching, at a minimum send them to some of these blog posts.
teach english online salary
Sometimes new teachers might not see the earning potential in this industry. If they’re willing to listen, I share my own story about how this job has provided me with a higher income than my brick and mortar teaching position as a middle school teacher. I tell people about the options available beyond teaching such as secondary positions and recruiting. While people can do well in this industry, I believe it’s always important to have an entrepreneurial spirit because you never want to put all of your eggs in one basket.
With opportunity comes hard work. You have to be realistic about what is working for you, how you can best serve others, and where you see yourself growing in your career or business. For me, I’m working on creating my own courses to train teacherpreneurs. If being an online entrepreneur interests you, be sure to look out for my FREE masterclass coming up soon where I share how I increased my income as an online ESL teacher. It will be the most in depth free training I’ve ever done. I’m so excited to bring it to you guys. Look forward to hearing about it from me via e-mail and on my YouTube channel in July.
