I have been teaching English online since June 2016 and to start I wasn’t making as much money as I was when I taught in the public school system, but by May 2018 I started to double my income, thus exceeding what I made as a public school teacher. You can do the same!

Tutor in Person
I have been tutoring in person since I quit my job as a public school teacher. Depending on the amount of students I am working with I can make an extra $800 to $2000 a month.

Consider the tutoring prices in your local community. What are your competitors charging? I speak Spanish as a second language and I have a master’s degree, so I looked at people with a similar background and chose a price in the middle. Most Spanish tutors charge anywhere from $25 to $100 so I chose $45, but I charge extra for driving 20 minutes or more. Therefore my price ranges from $45-$60 an hour.

I found the majority of my students on wyzant.com. At WyzAnt you can also teach lessons online using their platform or zoom.us. WyzAnt does take a percentage of your pay though. Other students I found via word of mouth. I posted about my work on Facebook and some friends referred me to their friends.

A lot of my students are long-term. They work with me for more than a year. I teach Spanish, ESL, reading and writing.

Interpret or Translate
For those of you who are bilingual you can search the web at places like upwork.com to find work. Upwork isn’t just for interpreters. You can do all different types of freelance work there. Fiverr is another option.

I actually got an interpreting job locally through a friend. I go in person to interpret for doctors and patients. So be sure to check out what your local area offers, too.

Transcribe
If you type fast check out Rev to get a super easy and interesting freelancing job. You can transcribe audio or videos for a myriad of subjects. I did this for a short time to make an extra $100 here and there. You have to learn the ins and outs of transcribing to get good at it because it can be time consuming. However, if you have free time, why not make some extra cash.

There are transcriptionists who only transcribe for a living, so there is definitely potential to make $1000 a month doing this if you put in the effort.

Blog or Make a YouTube Channel
This is something that takes time and patience. You definitely have to think long-term with this idea, but plenty of people out there are making well over $1000 a month blogging and YouTubing. If you have a subject that people want to know about then start with making it a hobby. That’s what I am doing right now.

I don’t make $1000 yet doing this, but the potential is there. After building my audience two years on Instagram, that led me to having my own Amazon Influencer Shop. After building my audience two years on YouTube, I finally got a $300 paycheck from all of the monetized ads.

So if you have an interest you’d like to share with the world start out with no expectations and then see what comes of it.

Recruiting
Something that really helped leverage my income this past year is recruiting. Almost every online ESL company has a referral link, you just have to know how to find people who are looking for extra income. In this case, you can start with friends or acquaintances, but the real money is found online in our teacher communities.

I have a recruiting workshop that I run to teach others how to recruit and make well over $1000 a month doing it. Sign up for my newsletter to get the details.

What about you? How are you making an extra $1000 a month?
