Creating a digital course
Creating a digital course takes time. You must commit, be a good planner and have the desire to finish. While we all want to earn more money and be successful, you must remember that your ultimate goal is to serve a community.
step 1 – choose a niche
I did an entire blog post on choosing a niche. However, I’ll summarize here what you need to remember. You must narrow your options down and remember you are not serving everyone. For example, if you want to offer something related to ESL you might decide to focus on beginners.
You should narrow it down even further by possibly offering a vocabulary course, a conversational course, or a grammar course. You could even narrow it down to a specific country. Remember the riches are in the niches. Here is an article if you want to dive even further into this subject.
Step 2 – do market research
When creating a digital course you must take time in choosing your niche. After you’ve chosen your niche you need to validate your idea by doing market research. With our ESL example, you would want to connect with ESL learners. Find out what their pain points are. What are their goals and what do they need help with?
You may even find that your audience starts referring you to friends or family. Referrals can create even further trust and credibility with your target audience.
By interacting with your target market you will start finding out what you thought was an amazing offer is really not what your customer wants or needs.
After you have done your research and validated your course idea, you’ll want to create an outline of your course. This is when the magic of your course starts to come together.
Step 3 – record your course content
The meat of your course will be in your videos. I recommend batch recording these videos since I find that there might be some preparation beforehand so why not knock out several at one time? I advise you to make sure you are hydrated, well-rested, and full! You are going to be expending a lot of energy and you want to be at the top of your game for your students.
After recording, you’ll then have to edit your videos. At this point, you will need to pick a platform on which to host your course. I personally like Kajabi, but there are others to choose from. However, Kajabi is an all-in-one platform where you can launch your course, host your website, landing pages, and even send emails. If you get to the point of wanting to host a membership you can even do that on Kajabi as well.
Step 4 – set a launch date
You put in a lot of hard work recording and editing your videos and finding a place to launch your course. The next step can be one of the hardest parts. Picking a date to launch your course. This is often where people stall.
Because let’s be honest its scary putting your work out in the world. But the key is to set the date. I often have pushed back my launches, but just by initially setting the date creates momentum. If you are someone who really likes to challenge yourself you may want to announce a date on your social media platforms.
However, remember this does put pressure on, so make sure you pick a date that gives you enough time and doesn’t make you feel rushed.
Step 5 – have a launch strategy through advertising and MARKETing
There is no way around this you must have a marketing strategy. There are many ways in which to do this. I mainly use Facebook ads to promote my masterclass. Through the masterclass, I am teaching the attendees a new skill. Prior to the attendees coming to the masterclass, they will receive a series of emails that will show the importance of attending.
In the masterclass, they will find out what they will get if they buy my course. They will then get one week to join. A popular trend that I am seeing is pop-up Facebook groups. This creates more trust with the creator and even more opportunities to engage with your audience.
While you’re going through the 5-step process of creating a digital course, be sure to take your time, reflect, and always remember to serve your community.
